Instead of Hate, Celebrate

If you’ve been walking to or from The Westchester mall en route to do your holiday shopping, you may have noticed some painterly action on Hale Ave., Maple Ave and South Broadway. For sure, things are beginning to look a lot more colorful in this neighborhood. In fact, three artists are outside painting new murals as I write this blog. Through a collaboration between ArtsWestchester and LMC, a Lennar Company, five New York artists are transforming a construction barricade into a curated exhibit of six street murals. The artists were each commissioned to paint the murals through a competitive panel process managed by ArtsWestchester.

You may recognize the first finished mural by artist Wane One from his handiwork on the popular street mural outside of our building on Mamaroneck Avenue. Well, Wane’s back in White Plains to paint his second mural – this time on the South Broadway barricade at the LMC Community site coming soon to the City. Wane explains, “The title of my new mural is Celebrate, taken from a quote by Prince, who said: ‘Instead of hate, celebrate.’ You see, murals attract the most attention when they are new. Since this mural will be going up at the start of the holiday season, I drew inspiration from the spirit of the holidays when people step away from their harried day-to-day lives to celebrate with family and friends the positive things in their lives.”

But Wane’s not alone in his celebratory use of color this season, the other four artists working around the 60 South Broadway site have paint cans and spray bottles too numerous to count on hand for this endeavor.
